In the early hours of Sunday June 28, a group of soldiers took the democratically elected president of Honduras, Mel Zelaya at gun point and transported him by plane to Costa Rica. Zelaya's government had carried out a whole series of progressive reforms in the fields of education, health care, etc. The masses have come out on the streets and called for a general strike on Monday 29 to reject this coup. We give them out full support. Come to the emergency picket of the embassy of Honduras in London on Tuesday, June 30 at 5pm.

San Francisco, CA - The Hands Off Venezuela campaign, along with other Latin America solidarity organizations, have called for a emergency rally and press conference to denounce the recent military coup against democratically elected president Honduran Manuel Zelaya.  The coup came on the day in which Hondurans were to go to the polls to vote on a constitutional referendum that would have laid the basis for dramatically changing the political landscape of the country.

"This morning military personal kidnapped Honduran president Manuel Zelaya. According to one witness, 200 soldiers arrived at the president's house at 6am this morning, 4 shots were fired and later they left in vehicles towards the air base. The soldiers also took over the government television station, Channel 8, and took it off air. Zelaya is currently speaking live on Telsur TV, from Costa Rica."

Caracas, Venezuela -  The text message that beeped on my cell phone this morning read "Alert, Zelaya has been kidnapped, coup d'etat underway in Honduras, spread the word." It's a rude awakening for a Sunday morning, especially for the millions of Hondurans that were preparing to exercise their sacred right to vote today for the first time on a consultative referendum concerning the future convening of a constitutional assembly to reform the constitution.
